Amara

Amara currently works for D.C. Public Schools as a Special Education Inclusion Teacher for grades 1-3. Her seven years of teaching experience encompasses grades K-12, but she has an affinity for elementary education. She is dually-certified in Elementary Education for grades 1-3 and Special Education for grades K-12. Amara most recently completed The CityBridge Innovation Fellowship for budding entrepreneurs that are considering starting their own school in the next five years. For over five years, Amara has tutored students in general subject areas, providing accommodations as needed for students with special needs.

Amara is a proud graduate of Cornell University (B.S.) and Lesley University (Dual M.Ed.). She grew up in Howell, NJ, and has lived in the Washington area for the past eight years.

As an instructor, Amara brings a diverse perspective and cultural competence to all of her interactions with both children and adults alike. She prides herself in embodying the qualities that children need to see mirrored and taught: self-efficacy, empathy, and resilience. Amara truly believes that all students are capable of achieving at high levels, regardless of perceived or realized abilities or disabilities.

In her free time, Amara loves to listen to music and sing, binge-watch shows such as Law and Order: SVU, and read fantasy and metaphysical books. She also has an affinity for wellness and writes her own wellness blog.
