Amelia

Amelia spent seven years serving as a high school English teacher in Columbus, Ohio. While teaching, she began a non-profit named Erase the Space with a teacher from a neighboring school district. Erase the Space gives students from disparate backgrounds an opportunity to practice democratic discourse and collaboration across difference. Amelia’s article on her work was published in the English Journal in March 2019; she and her Erase the Space partner also wrote a chapter on bringing empathy into online discourse that will be published in a text on digital ethics in early 2020.

Her ongoing experience writing for academia and recent experience writing for publication caused Amelia to become passionate about demystifying the writing process for students. Everyone gets stuck, everyone has to write multiple drafts, and everyone needs a good editor! As a tutor and teacher, she believes in making writing a rewarding experience through structured support and discussion. Her goal is for all students to become lifelong readers and writers.

Amelia is a proud graduate of The Ohio State University (B.A., M.Ed.), and the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College (M.A.). She grew up in Loudoun County, Virginia, spent 13 years in Columbus, Ohio, and returned to Washington in August to be closer to family. She is currently substitute teaching for District of Columbia Public Schools and working on Erase the Space.

Amelia and her husband live with their cat, Vincent van Gogh Gordon, in D.C. Outside of education advocacy and spending time with young people, she loves to read, take exercise classes, travel, and go to concerts.
